In January 2018, Stephen C. Brich was appointed commissioner of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the third largest highway agency in the country. Commissioner Brich oversees an annual budget of $8.9 billion and a team of more than 8,000 people who are responsible for designing, building, maintaining and operating the state's more than 59,000 miles of roadway, 21,000 structures and bridges, six tunnels and three ferry systems. Brich holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Virginia. He is a licensed professional engineer in Virginia and Maryland.
