Paul Tine was appointed commissioner of the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles in May 2025. He oversees daily operations, including vehicle registrations, driver licenses, and safety and emissions inspections, while working to improve customer satisfaction, staffing and wait times. Tine is the owner of Midgett Insurance Agency in Kitty Hawk and previously served two terms in the N.C. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2017. During his time in the General Assembly, he authored a strategic planning process for the N.C. Department of Transportation that became law and co-wrote legislation creating the N.C. Department of Information Technology. He co-chaired the Transportation Appropriations Committee and served on the Joint Transportation Oversight Committee. Tine also served on the Board of Trustees of Elizabeth City State University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in from James Madison University and an MBA from UNC-Chapel Hill. He and his wife reside in Dare County with their two sons.
