Kevin A. Shwedo is the executive director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), appointed by Gov. Nikki Haley in 2011 and continued under Gov. Henry McMaster. He has led major improvements in customer service and efficiency, including weekly staff training and expanded online services. Under his leadership, the agency has issued more than 515,000 REAL ID-compliant licenses, and nearly one million residents are eligible to purchase them online. Organ and tissue donor registrations have increased by more than 984,000 since 2014, reaching 2 million total. A retired U.S. Army infantry colonel and civilian aide to the secretary of the Army, Shwedo also led the state’s Disaster Recovery Office after South Carolina’s “1,000-year flood” in 2015. He continues to focus on streamlining operations and improving service delivery, particularly for REAL ID transactions.
